Used/ Refurbished Bulldozer

A used or refurbished bulldozer is a type of construction equipment that is not brand new but still functional and available for resale or reuse. Here’s what each term means:

Refurbished Bulldozer

Here’s a checklist and tips to help you inspect and choose a good used or refurbished bulldozer:

1. Visual Inspection

  • Frame & Structure: Look for cracks, welds, or signs of bending—this can indicate past accidents or structural fatigue.
  • Rust or Corrosion: Surface rust is common, but deep corrosion, especially on the undercarriage or hydraulic parts, is a red flag.
  • Blade Condition: Check for dents, warping, and excessive wear on the cutting edge or corners.
  • Cabin: Ensure controls are intact, seat is in good condition, and gauges/screens work.

2. Undercarriage

The undercarriage is a major wear item and can be up to 50% of the repair cost.

Check:

  • Track chains, rollers, and idlers: Look for wear, cracks, or missing parts.
  • Track tension: Loose tracks can slip; too tight can cause wear.
  • Sprockets: Should have symmetrical teeth; sharp or “pointy” teeth indicate wear.

3. Engine and Transmission

  • Start the engine: Check for hard starting, smoke, or strange noises.
  • Leaks: Look around the engine, hydraulics, and transmission for oil or coolant leaks.
  • Hydraulic function: Blade movement should be smooth and strong—no jerks or weak lift.
  • Transmission and shifting: Should change gears smoothly without delay or noise.

4. Operational Test

  • Drive forward and reverse in all gears.
  • Turn the dozer—check for responsiveness.
  • Test all blade functions (tilt, lift, angle, if available).
  • Check the brakes and parking brake.

5. Service Records & Hours

  • Ask for maintenance logs and total operating hours.
  • Check if major components like the engine or transmission were rebuilt or replaced.
  • Be cautious if hours are very high (over 10,000+), unless it’s been well-maintained or refurbished.

6. Verify Refurbishment (if applicable)

If the machine is refurbished:

  • Request a refurbishment report from the dealer or seller.
  • Ensure parts replaced are OEM (original) or equivalent quality.
  • Ask if there’s any limited warranty or return policy.

7. Brand Reputation & Parts Availability

Stick with well-known brands like Caterpillar (CAT), Komatsu, John Deere, or Case—they often have better support and parts availability.
